About Jane

There’s a little bit of Jane in all of us.

In 2000, we opened our first retail location in San Francisco. See Jane Run is so much more than a running store. As a woman-owned and operated company, See Jane Run reaches out to individuals of all shapes, ages and fitness levels. The product, training and events are selected and designed to reflect the diversity of the customers. The first store was opened in San Francisco in 2000. Since then, See Jane Run has opened three more locations, launched an online store and was selected as one of the 50 Best Running Stores in America in 2006 and 2007 by Footwear Intelligence and The Running Network.

Holistic fitness. We’re so much more than a running store.

As a woman-owned and operated company, we reach out to women across all levels of fitness. Our customers come in all shapes, sizes and abilities.  Yeah, we sell shoes and gear, but we also motivate, inspire and support. Our Train With Jane programs are designed specifically to meet the needs of a Jane who has never run beyond the corner to the seasoned Jane who wants to shave time off her personal best. And we even host our own events. Yep, we like to stay busy! See Jane Run half marathons and triathlons are happening in the Bay Area and Boise. Someday  we hope to make these events national. Stay tuned.

But we couldn’t do any of these groovy things without really a caring, knowledgeable, committed staff. So, when you walk into our store or contact us online and say “I want to do a triathlon, what do I need?” The last thing you’ll get is attitude.  Everyone on staff really is here for you. In fact, on race day, we might even join you, if that’s cool and all.

“You want to run a marathon?"

It was those very words that hatched the idea for See Jane Run. After years of standing on the sidelines, Lori Shannon decided it was her turn to run. Living in New York City, At 5’3” tall and wearing a size 16, she didn’t look like a typical marathoner. And yet, her desire was as strong as any athlete.

So, she went to her neighborhood running store where she was greeted with raised eyebrows instead of support and camaraderie. After a few years of getting this attitude from many shops, Lori had a great idea. Why not start her own store where women athletes of all shapes, sizes and age could shop and feel comfortable and inspired?

In 2000, several years after completing her first marathon, Lori, now a computer consultant in San Francisco, opened the first See Jane Run retail location in San Francisco's Noe Valley. She didn’t even know how to operate the cash register, but she knew how to help women realize their hopes and dreams.

Lori has competed in numerous marathons with a personal best of 4:38, ridden her bike cross-country (2,600 miles) and participated in triathlons. She has also opened more See Jane Run locations, and developed Train With Jane, an organized training program for women at all fitness levels looking to do marathons and triathlons. And now See Jane Run even puts on marathons and triathlons.

Which proves one thing. A girl can do anything she sets her mind to.
